Hey all! We are back on the road again headed towards Austin where we will spend the night with a friend of mine. Yesterday was eventful and amazing!
We woke up and walked down to the French Quarter for beignets and coffee at the famous Cafe du Monde. Delicious but VERY sweet!
After breakfast we took a stroll through the French Market and then took the ferry to Algiers, an island in the Mississippi river that’s pretty close to the New Orleans mainland.
Once on the island we took a tip from a local and walked down the levee. We stumbled upon Mardi Gras World, a warehouse where they keep lots of Mardi Gras floats. So cool! So naturally we snuck inside to take some pictures…
After we took the ferry home we had a really great lunch at the Green Goddess cafe. We had a margarita and a lentil pancake with crispy daal, shrimp, and coconut slaw. We also had a salad with local greens, local blue crab and wasabi aioli. So tasty!!
After lunch we walked down Magazine street where the thrift stores are, and then headed south for dinner at Jaques-imo’s. Dinner and wine were lovely – we had catfish with blue crab dressing that was to die for! It was dark in there, but I managed to catch a nice shot of Diane chillen’ with the Pope.
After dinner we took a cab to Bywater to go to Vaughn’s, a cute little out-of-the-way locals bar. There was a jazz band playing and we got our boogie on! After that we stopped for a beer at Mimi’s bar where a bunch of kids were playing a stand-up bass, guitar, drums and mandolin. We danced a few songs together and headed back to our hotel.
We packed up this morning and hit the road. We just drove over Lake Pontchartrain on the longest overwater bridge in the united states! Now we are stopping for gas and Diane is guiding me through my first Waffle House experience. Oy…
